I'm so pleased to be able to let you all know that I have been chosen as one of 26 Hothouse 2019 participants!
To receive a place on the program there was a fairly long process! It started in June 2018, when I had to write and send in a detailed proposal about my current and future plans for Arra Textiles along with accompanying images. In September, I found out I had been offered an interview, which I attended in Sheffield last October. In November I was awarded a place on the program, the only maker in Scotland to do so!
Set up by the Crafts Council in 2011, Hothouse is a six month programme designed to help makers cultivate their creativity and develop their business know-how with equal measure.
Throughout the course, I will travel across the UK completing a series of workshops including finance, self-presentation, marketing, business growth and creative thinking, with the added bonus of mentorship and 1:1 support.
As I live and work in Scotland, I will be funding my own place on the program after the resources for Scottish places was used elsewhere (all other makers receive fully funded places from the Arts Council England).
Rather than see this as a hurdle, I've decided it is an opportunity to design and create a brand new pattern which I will be launching through a KickStarter campaign later this spring to help towards covering my £5000 fee.
